History of Lan Na

by Sarasawadee Ongsakul

Translated by Chitraporn Tanratanakul

Here, for the first time since the Yonok Chronicle written more than a century ago, is a complete history of the northern Thai culture and kingdom of Lan Na. History of Lan Na chronicles the era of the city-states before the rule of Phaya Mangrai, the rise, flourishing, and decline of the Lan Na kingdom, the period of Burmese rule, the submission to Siamese authority, the impact of western imperialism, and finally Lan Na’s integration with the rest of Siam.

Since the publication of the Yonok Chronicle in 1898–1899, the archive of local and foreign materials and publications on Lan Na has grown considerably. Relying on this expanding compendium of historical source material, Sarassawadee Ongsakul has constructed a complete chronology of Lan Na’s social, economic, and political development, here finally translated from the original Thai for a wider readership. It has already been recognized as an important contribution to the study of Lan Na history, and now in English, will take its place as an essential work on Thai studies in the international arena.

SARASSAWADEE ONGSAKUL is Associate Professor in the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities of Chiang Mai University.

CHITRAPORN TANRATANAKUL is Assistant Professor in the same department.
