Thai without Tears
This handy little book will enable native English speakers to learn basic, conversational Thai both quickly and enjoyably. Written in a light-hearted, easy-to-read style, it begins with a section on understanding Thais who speak less-than-perfect English, followed by a section highlighting difficult points and pitfalls for the Westerner learning to speak Thai. The guide introduces vowel and consonant sounds for both American and British speakers and uses a simple and logical phonetic sign system for indicating Thai tones. Its 1,300- word English-Thai and Thai-English glossaries will be a boon to every beginning learner. Cultural details, grammati- cal features, and useful phrases are all included to aid communication.
DENIS SEGALLER is an Englishman who lived in Thailand from 1965 until his death in 2006. His two books on Thai customs and folklore, Thai Ways (1981) and More Thai Ways (1982), are still popular and continue to be reprinted.
